  9. The Bearing and Distance Computer is being distributed as shareware.  This
  10. means you have the opportunity to evaluate the product before purchasing it.
  11. If after a trial period of one month, you find this product to be useful and
  12. intend to use it, you are required to register the software for a small fee.
  13.  
  14. Shareware marketing helps you obtain quality software at low prices by 
  15. eliminating the high overhead associated with traditional marketing and dist-
  16. ribution methods.  You are encouraged to make copies of this software for
  17. evaluation by friends or for uploading to bulletin board services.  You must,
  18. however, distribute all files found on this disk complete and unmodified.  You
  19. may not sell this software.  However, you may charge a small fee (not to
  20. exceed $5 US) to cover the costs of duplication.

  42. Introduction
  43. ------------
  44.  
  45. The Bearing and Distance computer allows the user to determine the bearing and
  46. distance between any two points on the earth.  This data is useful for a
  47. number of applications, especially for determining antenna bearing, for which
  48. it was designed.
  49.  
  50. The user is allowed to enter the latitude and longitude of both the source 
  51. (starting point) and target (ending point) sites either manually or by table
  52. lookup.  A database of world coordinates is provided along with the computer. 
  53. This database is fully maintainable by the user.  Entries may be added,
  54. deleted or updated enabling the user to maintain current data without the need
  55. for periodic software updates.

  58. System Requirements
  59. -------------------

  61. This program is designed to run on PC compatible computers.  It has been
  62. tested on 286, 386 and 486 machines but should run on XT class machines as
  63. well.  The following are minimum system requirements to effectively use the
  64. Bearing and Distance Computer:
  65.  
  66.                     IBM PC Compatible Computer
  67.                     Hard Disk Drive 
  68.                     Color Monitor (CGA or above)
  69.                     640K RAM 
  70.                     DOS version 2.1 or higher
  71.  
  72. While this program was not intended to be run from floppy disk, this is
  73. possible.  However, floppy disk space is a consideration, especially as the
  74. size of the database increase.  Additionally, the performance will be
  75. seriously effected by floppy operation.  Floppy disk operation is not
  76. recommended.

  80. INSTALLATION
  81.  
  82. Under DOS
  83. ---------

  85. The following installation procedure is recommended.  However, you may opt to
  86. install on a different drive or into a different directory.  
  87.  
  88. 1.   Create the BEARING directory using the following commands:
  89.  
  90.                               CD \
  91.                               MD BEARING
  92.  
  93. 2.   Change directories to the BEARING directory using the following command:
  94.                
  95.                               CD BEARING
  96.  
  97. 3.   Copy the install program, INBEAR.EXE from the installation disk into
  98.      the BEARING directory using the following command:
  99.  
  100.                               COPY B:\BEARING.EXE
  101.  
  102. 4.   If the executable file INBEAR.EXE is present, run the install program
  103.      from within the BEARING directory using the following command:
  104.  
  105.                               INBEAR
  106.  
  107.      INBEAR.EXE is a self-extracting compressed file.  
  108.  
  109.  
  110.      If the compressed file, BEARING.ZIP is present, unzip it using PKUNZIP
  111.      decompression utility (not provided).  Enter the following command to
  112.      UNZIP the file:
  113.  
  114.                          PKUNZIP C:\BEARING\BEARING.ZIP
  115.  
  116.      The following files should be extracted or decompressed for the program
  117.      to run properly:
  118.  
  119.                               BEARING.EXE
  120.                               DXDATA.DAT
  121.                               DXDATA.K01
  122.                               BEARING.ASC
  123.                               BEARING.ICO
  124.  
  125.      BEARING.ASC is the user's manual for the Bearing and Distance Computer. 
  126.      It is an DOS text file and can be edited and printed from within any
  127.      text or word processor which can handle DOS text files.  You may also
  128.      print the user's manual using the following command:

  130.                               COPY BEARING.ASC > PRN
  131.

  134. Under Windows (TM)
  135. ------------------
  136.  
  137. Follow the installation procedure for installing under DOS.  Then proceed with
  138. the following instructions.
  139.  
  140. 1.   From within Windows (TM), select the desired program group by clicking
  141.      the left mouse button.
  142.  
  143. 2.   Select the File menu item by clicking the left mouse button or using the
  144.      Alt-F key sequence.
  145.  
  146. 3.   Select the New menu item by highlighting and click on New or by using the
  147.      Alt-N key sequence.
  148.  
  149. 4.   Select the 'Program Item' radio button by click the left mouse button or
  150.      by pressing the TAB key once.  Click the left mouse button on the 'OK'
  151.      button or press ENTER.

  153. 5.   Key in the following data on the Program Item Properties screen.
  154.  
  155.      Description:        BEARING
  156.      Command Line:       C:\BEARING\BEARING.EXE
  157.      Working Directory:  C:\BEARING
  158.  
  159. 6.   Click on the 'Change Icon' command button using the left mouse button
  160.      or highlight the 'Change Icon' button by pressing the tab key until
  161.      it is highlighted, press ENTER.
  162.  
  163. 7.   Press ENTER key or click on the 'OK' command button stating that no
  164.      icon files exist.
  165.  
  166. 8.   Enter the name of the icon, BEARING.ICO at the filename prompt.  Press 
  167.      the ENTER key or click on the 'OK' button.
  168.  
  169. 9    Select the 'OK' key on the Program Item Properties screen.  The BEARING
  170.      icon should appear in the selected program group.  
  171.  
  172. 10.  Double click on the BEARING icon to test.

  175. RUNNING THE BEARING AND DISTANCE COMPUTER
  176.  
  177. Under DOS
  178. ---------

  180. If you are running under DOS, change directory to the BEARING directory using
  181. the following commands:
  182.                                 CD \
  183.                                 CD BEARING
  184.  
  185. From the DOS prompt, execute the program by entering the following command:

  187.                                 BEARING
  188.  
  189. The program will begin to execute.  The screen will clear, a message will
  190. appear indicating that files are being opened.  The main menu screen will
  191. appear and normal use can begin.

  193. Under Windows
  194. -------------
  195.  
  196. The Bearing and Distance Computer will run under Windows (TM) but only as a
  197. DOS application.  If the Windows (TM) installation procedure has been
  198. followed, select the program group containing the BEARING icon.  Double-click
  199. on the BEARING program icon to begin execution.
  200.  
  201. The program will begin to execute.  The screen will clear, a message will
  202. appear indicating that files are being opened.  The main menu screen will
  203. appear and normal use can begin.

  206. NAVIGATING THE MENUS
  207.  
  208. The Bearing and Distance Computer is a menu driven system.  It was designed to
  209. be easy and intuitive to use.  By using a menuing system, complicated and
  210. difficult to remember command lines can be avoided.  The program has only
  211. three main menu items; PERFORM A COMPUTATION, UPDATE DX DATA and QUIT.

  214. Selecting Menu Items
  215. --------------------
  216.  
  217. Selecting a menu item may be done by highlighting the desired menu item.  The
  218. highlighted item is the item shown in reverse video behind a highlight bar.
  219. Only one menu item can be highlighted at one time.  You may move the highlight
  220. bar to the desired menu item by using the up or down arrows keys.  Once the 
  221. desired item is highlighted, press the ENTER key.

  224. The ESCape Key
  225. --------------
  226.  
  227. Each item on the main menu will lead to a working screen.  These screens will 
  228. actually execute the bearing and distance computations or allow you to update
  229. the user profile.  To back up from a screen to the main menu, simply press the
  230. ESC key.  
  231.  
  232. Exiting the Program
  233. -------------------
  234.  
  235. To exit the program and to return to the DOS prompt or to Windows, return to
  236. the main menu and select the QUIT menu item.
  237.  
  238. Pressing the ESC key from the main menu screen will also exit the program and 
  239. return to the DOS prompt or if using windows, return to Windows.  LOG IT!
  240. ensures that all updates to the database are completed and that all files are
  241. properly closed.

  244. Using the Bearing & Distance Computer
  245. -------------------------------------
  246.  
  247. The B&D Computer allows the bearing and distance from and to any point on
  248. earth to be determined.  This feature is useful for determining beam headings
  249. to DX locations.
  250.  
  251. To access the B&D Calculator, select the PERFORM A COMPUTATION menu item from
  252. the main menu.  The B&D computer screen will appear.  Provide the latitude and
  253. longitude for both the source and target locations.  The source values will
  254. default to the values entered on the user profile screen.  These values may be
  255. overridden by either manual entry or by table lookup.  Simply press the ENTER 
  256. key to select the default values.

  259. Manual Entry
  260.  
  261. To manually enter values in either the source or target latitude and longitude
  262. fields, tab to the appropriate field and enter the desired value.  Enter south
  263. latitudes and east longitudes as negative values.  For example:
  264.  
  265.          Data for Los Angeles, CA (34.10N, 118.20W) would be entered as
  266.                Latitude:  34.10     Longitude:  118.20
  267.  
  268.          Data for Tanzania (6.48S, 39.58E) would be entered as
  269.                Latitude:  06.48-    Longitude:  39.58-
  270.  
  271. Table Lookup
  272.  
  273. To enter latitude and longitude values via table lookup, place the cursor on
  274. the desired latitude field.  Press the F8 key.  A lookup table will appear
  275. displaying prefix and coordinate information.  Using the up or down arrow keys
  276. or Page Up or Page Down keys, position the highlight on the desired entry. 
  277. Press the ENTER key.  The table lookup screen will disappear and the desired
  278. latitude and longitude values will be place in the appropriate fields.  Press
  279. the ENTER key to continue.

  281. You may also locate particular entries in the table using the SEARCH FOR:
  282. field.  Simply enter the callsign prefix of the desired country at the
  283. SEARCH FOR: prompt.  The highlight bar will be positioned at the entry which
  284. most closely matches the value entered.  Simply press the ENTER to select
  285. the desired entry.

  288. Updating the DX Database
  289.  
  290. As new DXCC countries are created and old ones deleted, updating the
  291. coordinate table becomes necessary.  This program provides this capability,
  292. eliminating the need for periodic updates to be installed.  The user can
  293. maintain data themselves.
  294.  
  295. In order to update an entry, select the PERFORM A COMPUTATION item from the
  296. main menu screen.  The B&D Computer data screen will appear.  Press the F8 key
  297. to cause the table lookup screen to appear.  Position the highlight bar
  298. on the desired record and press the F1 key to update.  Fill in the required 
  299. fields and press Control-ENTER to complete the update.

  301. To add a new record simply press the insert key.  A blank ADD/UPDATE DX data 
  302. entry screen will appear.  Fill in the required data and press Control-ENTER
  303. to complete the addition.  The program will automatically sort the new entry
  304. into it's proper position in the database based upon the callsign prefix sort
  305. order.
  306.  
  307. To delete a record from the database, position the highlight bar on the
  308. desired record and press the DELETE key.  The ADD/UPDATE DX data entry screen
  309. will appear.  Press Control-ENTER to confirm the delete.  The highlighted
  310. record will then be deleted from the database.  If you do not desire to delete
  311. the record, simply press the ESC (escape) key while on the data entry screen.

  314. Updating the User Profile
  315.  
  316. The user profile module is used to maintain user specific information such
  317. as the user name, callsign if applicable, address, home latitude and
  318. longitude, etc.  This latitude and longitude information is used as the
  319. default data displayed on the Bearing and Distance Computer screen.
  320.  
  321. To update the user profile, select the UPDATE USER PROFILE item from the main
  322. menu.  The UPDATE USER PROFILE data entry screen will appear.  Fill in the 
  323. required fields and press Control-ENTER to confirm the update.  You may abort 
  324. the update prior to pressing Control-Enter simply by pressing the ESC (escape)
  325. key until the data entry screen disappears.
